I’m a VJ now

Over the past few weeks I have been working on my first ‘patch’ – an interface for controlling an audio-visual performance. Here is a still-shot of something made by the patch:

A patch runs in program called Max – also known as Max/MSP/Jitter. It is my first use of a new tool to link sight and sound, as I have done with p5, processing, and animation in the past.

Gas Pedal, Gas Pedal

I made a gas pedal-style video speed controller / interface in Max/MSP. When you press down on the mouse, it accelerates the playback speed of the video. When the mouse is released, the throttle eases back towards 1x speed:

The acceleration rates and deceleration rates can also be changed with the two sliders in the middle.

Embracing Serendipity: Sunlight & Voyeurism

I see a lot of potential to manipulate time and light elements with Max/MSP, so I have begun collecting footage of things that may be interesting to:

  • Speed up, slow down, time lapse, reverse, etc.
  • Apply filters of light to, and play with lens glare a little

Here is an example of some footage I collected recently – biking around Brooklyn. Hopefully it can turn into something nice!
